Do Pets Have Allergies?

Cats and dogs can suffer from a wide variety of allergies, just like people. Most allergies for pets fall within one of the following categories:

  • Environmental
  • Food
  • Medication
  • Pests

For cats, signs of allergies include the following:

  • Constant licking or grooming.
  • Biting or pulling hair.
  • Scratching.
  • Ear infections.
  • Snoring.
  • Runny, itchy, or bloodshot eyes.
  • Chewing paws or body.
  • Skin redness, dryness, and flaking.
  • Vomiting and/or diarrhea.
  • Paws that are swollen and/or sensitive.

Allergy symptoms for dogs are quite similar, though skin irritation is extremely common among dogs. Other symptoms of canine allergies include:

  • Scratching.
  • Licking.
  • Sneezing.
  • Skin redness, dryness, and flaking.
  • Hair loss.
  • Hot spots.
  • Scratching or rubbing its face.
  • Itchiness around the base of the tail or along its back.
  • Runny, itchy, or bloodshot eyes.
  • Vomiting and/or diarrhea.

Allergy symptoms between cats and dogs are quite similar, as are their causes.

How Are Pet Allergies Treated?

Individual animals may require more or less extensive efforts to treat their symptoms, depending on the specific allergens involved. The first step to treating pet allergies is to do what you can to remove the allergen from your pet’s environment.

If your pet has seasonal allergies, your vet may be able to prescribe allergy medications that address your pet’s specific needs.

If your pet is experiencing the symptoms mentioned above, now is the ideal time to contact our vet about allergy treatments, testing, or medications for your pet.
